From the stereo to the stage, we’re throwing it back to the most essential music discovery tool of the ’80s: the Mixtape! This June, hometown hero The Bul Bey presents four curated shows in the Lounge. Each lineup is handpicked by Bey, featuring some of Philly’s finest up-and-coming acts. We caught up with the rapper singer-songwriter ahead of the series as it kicks off next Wednesday, June 8th to talk about his selection, expectations for the series, and the power of playlisting.
You handpicked the artists who are featured in the series. What drew you to these local performers?
My process of choosing the artist came from my playlist on Spotify “The Bey List.” I actively listen to each of these artists. I’ll always be inspired by the greats like Stevie Wonder, The Roots, Sun Ra, etc. – but contemporary artists who are active in Philadelphia push me the most.
What can we expect from the series this June?
Audiences should expect to catch an intimate glimpse of artists and their work. I also may share some new music myself.
The mixtape was an essential music-sharing tool back in the day. How do you curate the perfect mixtape?
The perfect way to curate a mixtape is to have a singular intention. It could be to win the attention of a crush or to create a party atmosphere. This mixtape lineup is intended to show off the diversity of Philadelphia’s musical landscape and to give World Cafe Live patrons early interactions with new talent.
