Amid R&Bʼs continued evolution in sound and style, the demand for voices likeJack Freemanʻs is indicative of the genreʼs traditional aspects being alive and well. A native of Houston, Texas, Freeman has made it his mission to “make good music and tell the truth,” a mantra thatʼs earned the 33- year-old singer-songwriter a devoted following throughout his career. Raised in a musical household, Freeman was exposed to an array of genres as a youth, first showcasing his talents during a brief stint as a member of his church choir. However, the former high school football star would attend the University of Texas El-Paso on an athletic scholarship, putting his ambitions as an entertainer on hold. Transferring to Prairie View A&M University following his sophomore year, Freeman slowly rediscovered his love for creating and performing. Penning hooks and appearing on songs by local artists, Freemanʼs growing popularity would prompt him to take leave from school to dedicate his focus to his craft. Releasing his debut album, Lynnie Freeʼs Juke Joint, independently in 2011, Freeman would further establish himself as a performer after opening for gospel singer PJ Morton the following year. Returning in 2014 with the four-song EP Bliss, the crooner was voted by fans in Houston as 97.9 The Boxʼs Artist to Watch, cementing his status as a hometown favorite. Freeman has also made waves within Houstonʼs Hip-Hop community, appearing alongside Scarface on the song “Hot Seat” from the rapperʼs 2015 album Deeply Rooted. He has also featured on releases by Killa Kyleon, Slim Thug, Le$, and more, further entrenching him as one of H-Townʼs most sought-out collaborators. In 2016, Freeman was tapped by John Legend to become a member of The AXE Collective, and was featured alongside R&B star Joe for Radio Oneʼs Black Music Month celebration that same year. Unleashing Side A of his double-sided EP Spotless Mind in 2015, Freeman returned in 2017 with Spotless Mind: Side B. The release included Freemanʼs breakout single, “Nobody,” which was featured on Season 1 of Spike Leeʼs Netflix series “Sheʼs Gotta Have It.” In 2018, the rising star took his next creative leap with his sophomore studio album Define Love, which was accompanied by Chopnotslop remixes by DJ Candlestick and Swishahouse Records co-founder OG Ron. Capitalizing on the momentum, Freeman unveiled another pair of EPʼs, Leather and Blood, in 2019 and 2020, respectively. He also hit the road for the Texas leg of the Joe Budden Podcast Tour and has been an opening act for Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Bilal, Anthony Hamilton, Lyfe Jennings, The Dream, John Legend, Phife Dawg, and Tito Jackson over the past decade.
