Philly Sings Philly returns on Tuesday, October 18th to The Lounge with four local musicians playing sets of songs from their favorite local artists. At the heart of Philly Sings Philly is the desire to explore the storied musical legacy of our city, past and present.
The Lounge opens at 6pm for dinner & drinks and the music starts shortly thereafter, so you can stop by after work & still be home early. Plus it’s FREE – the perfect chance to come to hang out and support local independent music!
We caught up with a few of October’s featured performers for a sneak peek of what to expect from their sets!
RSVP to attend this Tuesday’s Philly Sings Philly, and join us every third Tuesday of the month for this tribute tradition.
Artist: Noah Roth
Cover Song: “Forever” by Bad Heaven LTD
Chicago-born songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and recording engineer Noah Roth relocated to Philly in 2018! Last month Noah released their fourth record “Breakfast of Champions” an ambitious album incorporating elements of alt-country and ambient sound. The record is Wilco approved – landing on the band’s Best Records of Summer 2022.
Noah says: There are a number of factors that went into this choice. John Galm is a close friend of mine and we play in a band together now, but for years before that I was just a really big fan of his music. I had followed John’s various projects since Snowing, and a friend turned me onto “Strength” when it came out. I instantly fell in love with the record, and this song in particular struck a chord with me.
I remember when I first heard it, being really taken aback by how beautiful the melody and lyrics were. It was such a pure statement of a lot of feelings I was feeling at the time, and it’s been one of my favorite songs ever since then. I can also remember a feeling of like, “wow, I wish I wrote that song,” which is still true, and I almost never feel that way about music by people I know. John remains one of my favorite songwriters in Philly, and when I decided to do Philly Sings Philly, I knew I had to play one of his songs.
Artist: Chelsea Reed and the Fair Weather Five
Cover Song: “Singing in my Soul“ an arrangement by Sister Rosetta Tharpe
Blues-folkers Chelsea Reed and the Fair Weather Five got their start inside jazz clubs and ballrooms playing for swing and blues dancers. Since then they have released songs steeped in jazz, blues, and folk traditions where Reed’s vocals and swing musicality shine! The band draws upon the intensity of powerhouse vocalists, the ingenuity of 20th-century composers, and the soul of the dance floor.
Chelsea says: One of the songs we’re covering is Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s arrangement of Singing in my Soul. The song itself was written by the Father of Gospel Music: Thomas Dorsey. However, I’m in LOVE with the energy and power that Tharpe brings to this song (and every song she recorded) with both her guitar and her voice! While she wasn’t born in Philly, Tharpe spent the last 15 years of her life and career in her house on 11th and Montgomery.
Artist: Lyndä
Cover Song: “Lions, Tigers, & Bears” by Jazmine Sullivan
Local R&B artist Lyndä returns to The Lounge bringing her signature Philly soul style. Lyndä cites Jazmine Sullivan, Lianne la Havas, Emeli Sande, and Ms. Lauryn Hill as some of her biggest influences. Her songs often revolve around themes of love, relationships, and how she sees the world.
Lyndä says: One of the songs I’ll be covering is “Lions, Tigers, & Bears” by Jazmine Sullivan. Jazmine is one of my all-time favorite artists and inspirations. When I think of this song it’s just so relatable! Being afraid to expose yourself to someone else and being vulnerable is a hard thing to do and she captures those feelings so well.
