“sweet, yearning indie rock” –Brooklyn Vegan “Matt Pondʼs latest incarnation heads for the wide-open spaces of heart-swelling, Petty/Springsteen American rock.” –MOJO Pondʼs songwriting builds up to a soaring high, tapping into a magnetic vein of instant indie joy.” Under the Radar New Album Winged Horse Out Jan 17, 2025 Matt Pond PAʼs Winged Horse is the sound of a man who loves driving fast and far, but who now balances that desire with a hard-won appreciation for slowing down and gazing in the rearview mirror to find beauty in the churned-up dust. Throughout Winged Horse, lyrics allude to – or brazenly reveal – a painful childhood, the astonishment of ardor, acceptance of oneʼs shadows. Some of this is new territory for Matt Pond PA. “Iʼve never wanted to reveal too much of myself,” Pond says. “But some of that reluctance has prevented me from being specific, or really getting to the heart of things.” From the bandʼs beginnings in Philadelphia, to their current home in the heart of the Hudson Valley, through 13 albums (among them Emblems, Several Arrows Later, The Dark Leaves, The State of Gold, and, most recently, the luminous The Natural Lines), Matt Pond PA has always been a living, breathing organism—one thatʼs constantly changing. Two notable mainstays are Pondʼs longtime right-hand man, Chris Hansen, and cellist Hilary James. “I named the band after myself, but the fact is that this is a complete collaboration,” Pond says. “Everyone Iʼve worked with lives in my head and in these songs.”
